Denim tailoring for men

Having been contacted by a Financial Times journalist recently for my thoughts on denim (see a few of them here), it got me thinking about denim tailoring.

I’d been noticing some pieces whilst out and about in London prepping for my men’s Personal Shopping trips A denim blazer here, a full suit there, and some tailored denim trousers……and I like them!

Maybe in part, because it reminds me of a pair of pleat front denim trousers I had, back when I first started working in London when I was 18. Such a fun and exciting time, and such a great pair of trousers!

If you’d like to explore the options, then check out the picks below and I’m sure you’ll notice others too, now that you’re aware of them.

This was one of the first full suits I spotted whilst buying a blazer with a client in the shop in Savile Row.

For a classic guy who wants something more casual, this suit is ideal. It’s got some structure to it, and the slim fit cut is easy to wear, so the statement is more about the fabric….denim with a subtle stripe.

It’s an excellent suit for dressing up, when you don’t want it to look like you’re going to work (if you still wear a suit that is), and you can also wear each piece separately too.

‘Revolver’ denim trousers - Cremieux - £450

Now these I love as they’re similar to the ones I used to have, with their pleat front! I’ve yet to buy them with anyone as I think they’ve only just restocked them in the stores, but I’m sure I'll be persuading a client into them pretty soon!

They feel spot on for now……smarter than regular jeans, different from chinos, but not as formal as flannels.

In fact, I’m finding the Incotex trousers at Slowear, just the right balance at the moment - they’ve got some nice textures, and patterns and I bought some chocolate brown wool cargo pants with someone yesterday! They’re not on the website yet but looked great.

And this was the second full suit I spied (not many sizes left though) - much more relaxed in shape than the previous one, so if you prefer that look, or a shorter, boxier cut suits your body shape better, then this one is for you.

Wear it in Winter with chunky knits and Paraboots, or in Summer with a linen polo knit, and loafers, and again separate it out to get maximum bang for your buck.

A wider cut in a heavier denim makes perfect sense for winter. If you’re looking for a change from your go-to denims, then these are comfortable and just that bit elevated from your everyday jeans.

And that pleat front and wider leg shape is great to give some welcome breathing room to a pair of chunky thighs! If you haven’t yet progressed to a looser shape then perhaps these will persuade you to take the plunge.

I really wanted a couple of clients to try these, especially as I’ve been having lots of success with Cad & The Dandy trousers recently, but alas they only had tiny sizes in stock in the store.

It’s very limited online too at the moment (at the time of writing there’s only a 28” waist or a 34” waist) but I’m keeping my eye out to see if they’ll get a restock soon.

If they do, I’ll be hot footing it down there with clients, quicker than you can say “how cool are those denim trousers?!”

Book in today, and in a couple of weeks you could be saying what this guy did!

I had a great experience refreshing my wardrobe with Sarah.

She’s exactly what you need if you’re intimidated by the shops around Bond Street and Regent Street — full of energy and knows many of the attendants at the shops personally.

I came away with clothes I would never have picked off the rack myself, but which I love.
