Relaxed, straight and tapered fit trousers for men

I know most of my clients don’t really want to follow trends slavishly, but they do want to look modern and up to date.

That means that some (not all) would like to move away from skinny and slim leg trousers and try out some of the wider leg shapes that have become more fashionable……but without looking ridiculous.

I say “not all” as for some people they’re just not quite right - either their body shape suits a slimmer leg, or they’re more classic and a wider leg still feels like too much of a statement.

For those who are looking to try out a different leg shape though, here are some of the my current favourites (plus one pair that I want to try out soon, with an upcoming personal shopping client!)

I was new to the Adsum brand, but it was a discovery I made in Liberty recently. I got a couple of pairs of trousers including these, with a client who was really ready to embrace the wider style. They suited his casual East London style really well and went perfectly with all the other items we got.

He’s tall so it’s easy for him to take the extra fabric in a relaxed leg shape but if you’re on the shorter side, do make sure they don’t make your legs look stumpy.

The Drake’s jeans aren’t too wide but are a looser style than you might be used to. I really like the slanted pocket detail which is unique to Drake’s, and they also have a slightly higher rise…..flattering if you want to make your legs look longer.

A little roll at the hem (as the model is wearing) tapers them in slightly, which is helpful if you feel like there’s a lot of fabric around your ankles.

So I have to admit, I haven’t actually tried these with anyone but they’re on my shopping list for a client to try next week! The shop’s in Covent Garden which is not an area I go to very often but the brand has that nonchalant, casual, vibe that my client is after.

They have great basics at good prices and this is the widest cut of trousers they do…….great for summer as they’re more airy too. I’ll report back on how we get on!

The 24 Trouser Relaxed Fit - L’Estrange - £129

I’ve been a fan of the ‘Lean Dean’ jeans from Nudie (see this post) and bought them with lots of clients, but more recently moved on to a straighter style called ‘Gritty Jackson’.

It’s 3 styles up from ‘Lean Dean’ on the Nudie fit scale moving from slim to wide. Again, they’re not extreme but embrace a slightly fuller cut.

Here’s one I’ve been banging on about and buying with clients for ages - looser in the thighs but with a tapered hem, it makes it easy to wear and a step in the looser direction without feeling silly.

There’s tons of different fabrics, weights and colours to choose from - check them out to see if they’re for you.

‘Assembly Pant’ tapered trousers in navy mini stripe - Folk - £145

There’s nothing I like more than helping guys rediscover their inner “cool” or bring out their style personality!

I don’t usually write reviews, but this one’s easy.

Sarah’s great to work with - always enthusiastic, professional, well-prepared, and honest with her feedback.

She’s a delight to spend time with and makes shopping enjoyable (which I didn’t think was possible). I always come away with things I actually want to wear.

The app she puts together with outfit combinations is seriously useful.

All in all, the service feels like a bit of a secret weapon. I’ve really enjoyed the process and would happily recommend her.
