Men’s check coats in January 2026

I was inspired to do this post by these images I saw by The Sartorialist on Instagram. They’re from Pitti Uomo, which is the big menswear show in Florence, where all the most stylish men from around the world gather.

Checks, especially overcoats in bold or subtle patterns, have been everywhere I’ve looked lately — and I wanted to share some of my favourites with you.

If you’re thinking about adding a statement check coat to your wardrobe this winter, hopefully these looks will inspire you. It’s exactly the kind of styling I like to explore with my clients when we go on a personal shopping trip for men - pushing the boundaries a little beyond the basics, and finding things that are different, yet still practical and easy to combine.

This is one of those coats you notice straight away. A rich brown check with a dark red running through it, which gives it depth and warmth — elegant, but very wearable.

The cut is generous, with a raglan sleeve and plenty of length (the model is 6’2”), so it’s comfortable and just right for winter layering.

It’s the sort of coat you’ll keep reaching for, year after year, but no need to wait…..we’ve still got a good few months ahead of us in 2026. Far easier to handle that thought, when you have a gorgeous new coat to wear!

If brown isn’t your thing, it also comes in a beautiful grey and blue check.

‘The Balmacaan’ coat in Moorland Urquhart check - Johnstons of Elgin - £1,750

If cooler colours are more your thing, this grey-based check is right up your street. Made from heavyweight Harris Tweed, it’s perfect if you like a slightly rugged, textured look, bringing a touch of the country to the city.

Want to create more of a statement? Add an electric blue scarf, or sweater over your shoulders like the guy above with the yellow. Or prefer something more subtle and classic? A luxurious taupe cashmere scarf keeps it classic and gives an understated vibe.

On their website, it mentions that it’s generously cut, so you can take your usual size for a relaxed fit, or size down for a more tailored silhouette.

Houndstooth check Harris Tweed overcoat - Sirplus - £795

Size XXL and fancy a stylish new coat, with 30% off to see you through the rest of the winter? You’re in luck!

This flattering check coat from Hartford is an easy win. Cut with a relaxed raglan sleeve, single-breasted front and a practical ¾ length, it’s smart without feeling too formal.

It’s the kind of coat you can throw on without thinking — just as good over a hoody and jeans as it is layered over a suit. Comfortable, versatile, and properly useful for those cold days that haven’t quite finished with us just yet!

‘Graig’ brown coat - Hartford - £390

Perfect for weekends or work, this Prince of Wales check coat is a brilliant addition to your wardrobe.

As you can see from how it’s styled here, it’s casual enough to go with jeans and a jumper, but it also comes into its own dressed up — try it over pleat-front grey flannel trousers, a navy polo knit and tan suede chukkas for an easy, polished look for smart casual occasions.

‘Edward’ coat in Prince of Wales check - Balibaris - £315

A generous cut, length and an inverted back pleat, this is an excellent coat for the taller, broader guy who wants to make a statement, without trying too hard.

The houndstooth check has lots of different colours in, making it easy to style for work or weekends. Wear it over unstructured tailoring and merino knits during the week, or throw it on with a chunky cream roll neck, dark denim & brogue boots at the weekend — either way, it brings loads of personality to your look.

Brown houndstooth check wool raglan coat - Drakes - £1,395

If you love the contemporary style of these coats, but worry about too much volume then check out (pun intended!) this coat from Wax London.

With a relaxed fit, set-in sleeves and a slightly shorter length, it’s easier to manage while still keeping that modern, stylish edge.

You may think plain black or navy is more versatile but because there’s a variety of colours in this check, I'd argue this is more so……

It’s got a bit of blue to go with denim, black for tailored trousers or black jeans, browns and reds to go with similarly toned sweaters or to liven up neutrals. See what I mean?!

  • Do you find it difficult to decide what suits you when you’re out shopping?

  • Do you get overwhelmed by the choice?

  • Or perhaps you don’t even know where to start looking?

Then let me help. I’ll do all the hard work for you - prepping in the shops before we meet to identify potential items for you to buy, so all you have to do is turn up and try some stuff on!

I’ll even create multiple outfits from the things you buy and put them in an app, so you can download them to your phone and have them to hand each morning when you’re getting dressed.

I had a really great experience working with Sarah on my wardrobe edit and shopping day.

She was incredibly patient and kind throughout the process, and she worked hard to find pieces that truly matched my taste.

She came very prepared to our shopping trip with plenty of options already lined up, which made everything so much easier.

Beyond the new shops and styles she introduced me to, I loved how many outfits she was able to put together using my existing clothes.

After we finished, she added a ton of combinations into the app using both my new and old pieces so I can see exactly how to match them.

It’s made getting dressed a lot simpler and I would highly recommend her to anyone looking for a stylist
