Outerwear edit: a personal stylist’s guide to Autumn coats, jackets & macs for men
It’s been an abrupt start to Autumn here in the UK and it feels like it’s done nothing but rain, rain, rain.
September is always a busy time for personal shopping trips and I’ve been out with clients finding jackets to suit this weather, and transition them into heavier winter coats.
Here are some of the ones they’ve bought and some others I’ve seen around while doing my recce-ing for them.
PAUL SMITH storm system mac with detachable gilet
My client and I were in the personal shopping suite in Harvey Nichols and I brought this one up to show him how it would look with something else, not really meaning it to be an option. But he had other ideas and instantly fell in love with it, and it was in the yes pile before I could say “have you seen the weather?!”
It’s made from Loro Piana fabric (hence the price) and is completely waterproof. There’s a detachable gilet inside so you can adapt it easily to the temperature outside. It’s very sleek and stylish on, and lightweight, not stiff and starchy like some macs are.
Navy ‘storm system’ wool mac with detachable gilet - £1250 - Paul Smith at Harvey Nichols - (read more details about it on the Paul Smith website)
REISS mushroom “Player’ coat with removable insert
I was pretty sure this would be a winner as soon as I saw it, and I was right!
It’s the sort of hybrid coat that lots of clients like - smart enough for work when you don’t want to wear a wool overcoat, but it also wouldn’t look out of place with jeans and boots and a chunky knit sweater at the weekends too.
It’s got a removable funnel neck insert (just down the front part) which adds a bit of warmth and is especially practical if you’re not a fan of wearing scarves…..or always lose them!
It comes in black too but this mushroom shade really suited my client’s Autumn colouring, and is easy to combine with other things.

BOGGI field jacket in padded technical fabric
Another possibility if you want one of those “in between” smart casual jackets. As you can see from the image above, it works well with a suit and tie, but will also look great over smart casual outfits. You could even take the kids to the park in it…..a great all rounder.
It has a hood tucked away in the collar and is padded so it’ll be warm but not so thick and hot, you’ll fry when you get on the Central Line!
Field jacket in padded technical fabric - Boggi Milano - £519
BOSS Goretex waterproof jacket with padded inner
I saw this option when researching for yesterday’s client, and thought it looked really good. it’s completely waterproof as it’s made of Goretex, and it’s essentially 2 jackets in 1.
The padded puffa inside is quite thick so if you want something really warm and waterproof this is the one for you. It comes in navy as well and has a hood. Very cosy as well as stylish - you’ll be the best dressed dad watching from the sidelines at Sunday football practice if you get this one.
Goretex waterproof jacket with removable padded inner - Boss - £745
BALIBARIS cotton gabardine “Smith’ raincoat with removable hood
This has been a popular choice with clients too - I’d describe it as being in between a mac and a parka. With the hood buttoned into place, it has a more casual look about it, but you can remove it (don’t forget your umbrella when you do that!) and it instantly becomes smarter.
It’s not heavy so perfect for the weather now, and again in Spring…..or maybe all year round if our winter is mild and you don’t feel the cold too much.
Cotton gabardine ‘Smith’ raincoat with removable hood - Balibaris - £445
Would you like someone to narrow down the choices in the shops for you?
Do you get fed up when you go on your own and are never quite sure what to buy and if it looks good?
Are you reluctant to go shopping, even though you like having nice clothes, because you can never find what you want?
If you answered YES to the questions above, then you’re like the majority of my clients. They love looking good but don’t have the time or inclination to go and spend hours hunting around the shops.
So they book me in to do it for them! I thoroughly research the options for you first and show you the best selection that I’ve found that fits your brief. Don’t worry if you’re not quite sure what you want though - I can figure that out for you too!

She far exceeded my high expectations.”
